History of snowboaring

Sherman Poppen has invented snowboarding in 1965.
He fixed two ski's together to surf on the snow. He called the board a snurfer.
The Snurfer was sold over half a million times in 1966, but is was seen as a toy for kids.
Poppen organised competitions with this new board.

Then, early pioneers like Jake Burton, Demetrije Milovich and Tom Sims created more
specialized board designs. At the 80's there were already a handfull snowboarding brands.
(Burton, Winterstick, Sims, Barfoot, Avalanche, Gnu)
In the 80's and the 90's, snowboarding competitions and events such as halfpipe and
boardercross became international staples.
In 1998, snowboarding debuted in the Olymics in Nagano, Japan with a giant slalom and
halfpipe competition.

In the beginning, not everybody accepted snowboarding. When the canadian boarder
Ross Rebagliati won the gold medal (1998) in the giant slalom he had to submit an urine sample.
This sample showed that he was positive for marijuana with 17.8 nanograms per milliliter.
He said that he hadn't smoke one for a long time. Because of that kind of incidents, snowboarders got
a bad name in the beginning. In the beginning there were also not much ski resorts that accepted
Snowboarders. But now snowboarders are accepted in almost all ski resorts. And snowboarding was
finally accepted bye everyone.
